by for the president. but let's begin with the romney camp, new jersey governor chris christie. good morning. >> good morning, george. >> since the convention, romney has fallen behind in the battlegrounds. new polls out this morning, ohio and iowa, behind. governor romney has to shake things up wednesday night. >> he's going to, i mean, every time mitt romney has been confronted in this campaign with one of these moments, he has come through the debate and performing extraordinarily well. contrasting himself and his vision to whoever the opponent was at that time. when we get to thursday morning, you'll be saying it's a brand-new race with 33 days to go. >> that hasn't happened yet. on the one hand he has to be assertive with the president but like wbl the voters. how does that happen. >> be truthful. if you tell the truth about what's going on in our country, people are going to understand that's critical of the president's stewardship, also to lay out a positive and hopeful vision for what the future can be for our children and grandchildren under a romney administration. romney can walk and chew

economy and what each side would do to fix that situation. president obama and governor romney each had a chance to explain what would happen to your taxes they were in charge. >> the question is not where we have been but where we are going. >> it's going to take a different path, not one x have been on, not the one the president described as a top down cut taxes for the rich. that not what i'm going to do. >> it's not possible to come up with enough loopholes for individuals to avoid raising the deficit or burdening the middle class. >> there will be no tax cut that adds to the deficit. >> i will take ideas from anybody, democrat or republican as long as they are advancing the cause of making middle class families stronger and giving opportunities to middle class. >> i have got five boys. i'm used to people saying something that not always true but repeating it hoping i will believe it. i will not reduce the taxes paid by high income americans. >> we do better when the middle class is doing well. by giving them those tax cuts they have more money in their pocket so maybe they can buy

, as we welcome president obama and governor romney. [cheers and applause] [applause] >> welcome to you both. let's start the economy. let's begin with jobs. what are the major differences between the two of you about how you would go about creating new jobs? >> thank you very much. i want to thank the university of denver for your hospitality. there are a lo of -- lot of points i want to make. the first point i would like to make, is 20 years ago, i became the luckyest man on earth because michelle obama married me. i just want you to know, next year we will not be celebrating it in front of 40 million people. four years ago we went through the worst financial crisis since the great depression. many jobs were lost. the auto industry was on the brink of collapse. because of the resilience and determination of the american people, we have begun to fight our way back. over the last 30 months, we have seen five million jobs in the private sector created. the auto industry has come roaring back. housing has begun to rise. the question tonight is not where we have been, but where we are goin

their jobs because governor romney was more concerned about short-term profits than creating jobs. >> people need to know what mitt romney did to miriam, indiana, in 1994. >> you don't just come in and take everything everybody's got and destroy a business. i mean, that's what they did. >> when you take away all the good-paying jobs such as we had here at gst steel in kansas city, the middle class is going to become extinct. >> neither obama nor romney have public events scheduled for today, but vice president joe biden and paul ryan were both on the trail. the vice president was in florida this morning, ryan is in new hampshire and is traveling to ohio for an event tonight. we will, of course, have more on all of these stories over the next two hours. in case you have not heard, the countdown is on to colorado. even though both campaigns are playing the lowered expectations game, you can bet their furiously preparing for the denver debate. joining me now to talk about it, garrett hake, who has been traveling with the romney campaign. garrett, good saturday afternoon to you. what can you tel

of likely voters shows the race between president obama and governor romney remaining up for grabs. the president leads 50% to 47%. but his three-point margin is within the poll's sampling error. our chief national correspondent john king is in denver getting ready for the debate over there. that's the site of the debate. john, take us into these numbers. what are you seeing? >> reporter: well, wolf, i can tell you this, talking to senior officials in the romney campaign, they believe after a tough week or ten days, the last several days, they have a little bit of a breeze at their back. they say the race has stabilized. you dig into the numbers. what is the most important issue in this first debate? the economy. look at this poll. which candidate would better handle the economy? the president, 49%, governor romney, 48%. a dead heat. the president has to defend his record. governor romney not only needs to attack his record but to convince voters he has a better place to take them if he wins the election. and you know this full well, the reason this debate and what both candidates

this tape. let me play it. >> we believe, as a campaign, i think governor romney believes what is most relevant is the president's policies and how they are affecting the economy today, how they are affecting people's bottom line, how they are affecting household incomes. >> does this show a priority list difference, perhaps some of the conservative commentators, chip, wanting to find their a ha moment to get back, i guess, that the 47% video of romney as opposed to what kevin madden says answered the campaign would like to talking about, the priorities getting this economy turned around? is there a divide within conservatives in the party on how to fight back? >> when you are running a campaign and there's other groups doing everything, always doing something else. kevson very smart, keeping it focused on jobs and the economy and the romney campaign. and i think the only a ha is going to matter today about 9:01 when the debate starts and these two guys are on the same stage together. i think we are not going to be talking about videos or gotcha videos or anything else tomorrow or toni

policies that governor romney supports. that's a very strong argument. no one i think on the democratic side will go around and celebrate and sit there and say the job is done, but when the choice in voters' minds, especially when you have this debate in the coming debates, the president is going to be able to turn around in a very strong and forceful way and say, listen, we've created 5 million jobs. the unemployment rate is now under 8% and governor romney your policies are the ones that will end up creating a worse economic climate, a worse jobs crisis because we know that. it already happened before. so that's what i think it does. it provides the president a really strong contrast. >> susan, mitt romney ate his spinach for that debate. peggy noonan who has been riding the campaign trail of mitt romney and what he's been doing it pretty hard in her editorials. noonan writing now the real romney is the one who can communicate. he's straight and direct and not fancy. forgivably jargony but worried about america and sin veer. that's the romney who showed up for the debate. stay that gu

, and if you are going to save any money through what governor romney's proposing, what has to happen is that the money has to come from somewhere. and when you move to a voucher system, you are putting seniors at the mercy of those insurance companies, and over time, if traditional medicare has decayed or fallen apart, then they're stuck. and this is the reason why aarp has said that your plan would weaken medicare, substantially, and that's why they were supportive of the approach that we took. one last point i want to make. we do have to lower the cost of health care. not just in medicare -- >> in a minute. >> but overall. >> okay. >> that's a big topic. >> i want to get to it. all i want to do, very quickly, before we leave the economy -- >> let's get back to medicare. the president said that the government could provide the service at a lower cost and without a profit. if that's the case then it will always be the best product that people can purchase. >> just a minute, governor. >> my experience is the private sector is typically able to provide a better product at a lower cost.

of change may be shifting around governor romney, who struck a new tone on immigration during an interview with "the denver post" last night. romney told "the denver post," quote, the people who have received the special visa that the president put in place, which is aa two-year visa, should expect the visa would continue to be valid. i'm not going to take something they purchased. this is what governor romney said in june the day after the president issued the executive order. >> i think the action that the president took today makes it more difficult to reach that long-term solution, because an executive order is a short-term matter. it can be reversed by subsequent presidents. >> not reversed if he becomes president. nbc's first read calls it a, quote, tale of two mitts, saying on the one hand you have romney saying in recent interviews he won't revoke the executive action on young, illegal immigrants. that he's the grandfather of obama care, and these elm pathetic because he got all massachusetts residents health insurance. on the other hand, one of us saw first hand all the conservati

>>> governor romney lives to fight another day. many of president obama's key supporters voicing their disappointment today that he did not take on governor romney when he had an opportunity. here's some of the headlines. in fact, the "los angeles times" says, quote, obama fans are shocked by mitt romney's dominance in debate. "the chicago tribune" said for obama words not said spoke the loude loudest. it said obama hit with a left hook on tv and online. the president is hitted to wisconsin, but not before taking one last parting shot a a fiery rally in denver not too long ago. >> when i got onto the stage, i met this very spirited fellow who claimed to be mitt romney. it couldn't have been mitt romney, because the real mitt romney has been running around the country for the last year promising $5 trillion in tax cuts to pay for the wealthy. the fellow on stage last night said he didn't know anything about that. >> around the same time governor romney was making a surprise appearance at the conservative political action conference, cpac in denver before heading to virginia for an

or worse and i think governor romney is going to make it better and that's what he's going to say tonight. >> a note about your home state senate race. what do you do about todd akin? do you think he should be elected to the united states senate? >> well, you know, i said the other day, i think we need change in the government in general and the united states senate in particular. i think we need a senator and senate who will vote to repeal obama care, get the budget under control. >> despite what he said? >> that's not claire -- i said i'm supporting mr. akin and he's going to work as hard as he can. >> mitt romney is not supporting todd akin. >> i'm a missourian. i want a senator who will vote to change the way the federal government is operating. that's not the incumbent of missouri. >> thank you for being with us today. >> up next, our politico briefing. the five things to watch for tonight in denver. you're watching "andrea mitchell reports" special coverage of the presidential debate live in denver, only on msnbc. humans -- even when we cross our t's and dot our i's, we still run in

what these laws are all about. >> voter i.d., which is going to allow governor romney to win the state of pennsylvania, done. >> sorry. it's not done. not anymore. not on our watch. not when we have our say. folks, the fight is far from over. under this ruling, the law's merely been delayed. not dismantled. across the country, republicans are fighting to keep their laws on the books. and they're dreaming up new ways to cheat the system. we've told you about the voter fraud scandal surrounding gop operative nathan sprool. now the investigation is taking the federal level with judge cunningham demanding answers about phoney addresses, even dead people registered as republican voters. meantime, millions of americans are already voting. today in ohio, polling stations were busy with the state's first day of early voting. people actually slept overnight in tents so they could be the first in line to vote. and today the first lady was in ohio, urging people to get out to the polls. >> here in ohio, it is already election day. already election day. early voting starts today, today! i know tha

. thank you. >> governor romney fallen behind in the national polls. new polls out this morning iowa and ohio behind in both. we were laughing about the expectations setting on both sides but, governor romney has to shake things up, wednesday night, doesn't he. >> he is going to. every time mitt romney has been confronted in this campaign with one of these moments he has come through in a debate and performed extraordinarily well, laying out his vision very clearly and also contrasting himself and his vision with whoever his opponent was at that time. i have absolute confidence, george, all you will be shaking your head it is a brand new race. jenna: new jersey governor chris christie, making a bold prediction, how about that? the bold prediction related to the first presidential debate saying governor mitt romney's performance against the president could very well change the entire race. but how important are presidential debates and how much do they really shape the outcome in november? we heard a lot. joining me someone who has done research on polling impact of past debates. larr

to lose his cool. susan, did governor chris christie think he was helping mitt romney by saying that the debate would just be turning this race upside down? what do you think? >> i think chris christie was just being chris christie. while you're correct, a lot of people were dampening expectations, chris said what a lot of people are hoping and thinking. mitt romney delivers a vision with some specifics that people can grab on to and can turn this race around. the fact is things flip-flopped very, very quickly in the last two or three weeks. they can go back the other way. only if romney performs well. >> chris kofinis, do you believe that romney can turn this around as many months as he's had, one misstep after another, and by a wide margin, americans think president obama is going to win this debate and has the upper hand. what about expectations and what about the possibility of romney turning this around? what do you think? >> well, that's clearly their strategy. you have to love governor christie for raising expectations, but he was basically telling the truth. the romney c

and former governor mitt romney are in final preparations for tomorrow night's debate at the university of denver, the first time the candidates will square off in the race for the white house. c-span will air the debate live tomorrow night. we would like to hear what your plans are for tomorrow night's debate. why would you be watching or by night? here are the numbers to call -- -- why will you be watching or why not? you can also join the conversation on social media. send us a tweet or join the conversation on facebook. you can also e-mail us. the "washington times looks at presidential debates, who watches and what they gain for it -- from it. we would like to hear from you this morning, your take on watching presidential debates and this one in particular happening tomorrow. here is the headline from the denver post -- the school is getting ready for the national spotlight as it will host the candidates tomorrow night. let's hear from tyson in los angeles on our republican line. good morning. caller: happy birthday to you, libby. host: are you watching the debate? caller: absolute

in a spiral to death. can he do it? i don't know. i have not seen any indication from governor romney or his campaign at any moment, whether it was the convention, during the summer, since the convention, that suggests they are able to maximize, you know, an opportunity. so i'm a little suspicious. but the reality is, he's going to come in here with a little lowered expectations and at least in terms of the public opinion polls. but let's be honest. he's a good debater. the problem with governor romney is he tends to also put his foot in his mouth and create these land minds, like the $10,000 bet. which if that happens in this it debate, it will be a disaster. >> is it the idea of him having some zingers for his opponent who was pretty academic on the issues and has been very well schooled up in the debate process, does the romney camp actually think that zingers are going to get president obama off his game and have an impression on the american people? susan, what do you think about that? >> i think, first of all, you love saying the word zingers. it seems to be very much part of the conve

and governor romney probably put in an equal amount of time preparing for this debate. >> reporter: just two days after the president joked his own advisors were pushing him to do more debate prep. >> they're making me do my homework. >> reporter: obama campaign manager said romney had an advantage going into the debate. >> governor romney's prepared more for this debate than any president in modern american history. when you're president, you can't take out an entire week. >> we don't need to have a board of 15 people telling us what kinds of treatments we should have. >> reporter: the rnc released a new web video called the smirk seizing on the president's sometimes uncomfortable body language. romney can only look to the obama campaign's own web video to see the president's next line of attack. >> with the language mitt romney uses, the verdict is false. >> reporter: democrats are already labeling some of romney's statements like this one on health care outright lies. >> pre-existing conditions are covered under my plan. >> well, actually, governor, that isn't what your plan does. >> repo

? >> 14% is the number. 23 million is the number quoted by governor romney during the debate. it is a grim employment situation any which way you slice it. bill: but now you're still now below the big number. you're below 8%. so to the politics on this now? >> that is where some of the mistrust comes in. how convenient the rate drops below 8% first time in 43 months, five weeks before the election. there is some mistrust of these numbers along with the contradiction between 873,000 people found work, only 114,000 new jobs. mistrust of this report. bill: on that point it will be interesting to see how president obama plays this in fairfax, virginia later today. how mitt romney responds. he is in virginia, southwestern part of the state. also in florida. >> i suspect the president will play it big, we're going in the right direction. look at this 7.8%. how governor romney will respond i don't know. bill: stuart, 9:20 a.m.. this will pop up again. martha: let's get context of this. back in december 2007, when the recession began the unemployment rate was 5%. in october of 2009, that is the pe

won, if you believe that? >> well, i think that, yeah, governor romney might well have been more aggressive but i don't believe he was more presidential. i believe the president obama handled himself with that dignified reserve is his hallmark. anybody that expected him to come out in an aggressive in your face way has not been watching the president for these last four years. i thought the president was particularly strong tonight, especially in contrasting the two economic views of these candidates. president obama's view of how we fix our economy. much more in line with main strewn americans believe, the middle class believes. the things that president clinton used, balanced approach. opportunity and, i thought that governor romney really didn't do anything to dissuade the general public from the view that he would like to go back to the days of the bush tax cuts for the wealthy and hope that this time, instead of growing deficits, and growing unemployment, that it grows jobs. so governor romney really needed a game changer tonight. i hate to say this but i find myself agreein

romney, who has been a governor, a business guy. he has run the olympics. i think his attitude would be efficiency. i will come in and look at running governments, like a business, which is not always the right answer because government is not a business. you should always look for efficiencies, but i have not seen a good example yet of a business person that has come into government and made a run like a business. there is a lot of talk about that, but we forget cultures are very different and resumed outcomes are different as well. i think we're missing an opportunity for both candidates to be leading the national discussion on priorities. to begin framing the real priorities for the country, which seems to get lost in the garble for the cavity or the message of the day. it is probably not unusual, because you look at elections in the past, whether it was president obama talking about renegotiating nafta, or bill clinton, the butchers of beijing. forging a pretty strong relationship with china. i think you have to discount a lot of the rhetoric and a lot of what you hear about prio

pushed higher later in the session following the u.s. presidential debate where governor romney, a pro business candidate, made a competitive he showing. the nikkei rebounded off a four week low with automakers and financials surging. but textures lost ground after hewlett-packard's profit warning. contract makers in eye with an also took a beating with the computer share sub index slipping 1.6%, but managed to close flat. we saw a bit of profit taking on samsung electronics ahead of it q3 earnings guidance tomorrow. australian miners were lower, but wleptd support to the 200 ends at a 14 month high. weaker than expected august retail sales added to the case for further rate cuts. sensex still higher by 0.9%. back to you. >>> president obama and mitt romney met face to face last night in denver, colorado for their first u.s. presidential debate. they focused mostly on the economy. with a month to go before the election, both men aim to prove to voters that they're the right choice to lead the country for the next four years. john harwood got a firsthand view of the debate and filed thi

? >> sure. governor romney has to make the debate about the president's economic policies and he has to connect those to the economic conditions we're in now. right now, people believe the economy is bad, but they're not blaming the president for it. tonight governor romney, standing face-to-face with president obam has to connect those two things. he can't get defensive. the president, on the other hand, has to deflect from that. he has to make the debate about the choice between himself and governor romney and press him about specifics. try to make the argument that the -- that governor romney's policies would take us off of a path of recovery we might be on right now. and he can't get defensive as well. both men, when they get into the defensive posture, tend not to do very well in debates. >> what do you think is the most treacherous ground for each of them? what is the thing often -- i'm sure you've studied a zillion hours of debate tapes. what triggers debates in both of them? >> when both get on defense, when they have to defend positions they're uncomfortable with, they tend

new jersey governor chris christie, and one-time adversary, newt gingrich. so far romney is sticking to a familiar theme, but does he need to do more? >> i will lower the tax rate. he wants to creat to raise them. i'll create jobs and he'll kill them. also marsha blackburn, bob shrum, and larry sabato from the university of virginia center for politics. as we head into first presidential debate, we'll talk about the state of america at home and abroad with the distinguished panel. michelle rhee, former head of the washington, d.c. school system and founder of students first. economist mark zandi of moody analytics. bob woodward, author of "the price of politics" and hendrick smith, author of the new book "who stole the american dream?." it's all ahead on "face the nation." captioning sponsored by cbs from cbs news in washington, "face the nation" with bob schieffer. >> schieffer: and we welcome now to the broadcast new jersey governor chris christie. governor, thank you for being here. governor i have to start off by saying i don't hear very many republicans these days who think mitt

of them to get their message out. but the key for governor romney is go out there and be respectful and be strong and make sure that the truth gets out there. he's going to get out there and show he has a choice. we have a choice between a president with a record who promotes government dependency as opposed to romney who will help upward mobility for this country. that's a choice the american people want to make and they will make an informed choice based on the facts getting out there. >> you don't think it helped mitt romney had the primary to go through going up against your former bosses in those debates? >> those are certainly helpful. but when you have obviously more than one person you're going against, it's rather difficult. but the good thing as we saw in '08, what he was good with the mccain/obama debates, he let them go face to face. i expect to see that wednesday night. that's good. get the two of them in there debating the issues. make sure each of them are factually accurate about their records. focusing on the economy wednesday night. but foreign policy is something

will probably change his strategy for the next debate. governor romney and his running mate paul ryan are holding a rally right now in the battleground state of virginia. we'll go there live in a moment. that's trace at begins on stage. today, the president was back on the campaign trail, too. he told a crowd in denver the guy he faced off against last night was not the real governor romney. >> he said that he doesn't even know that there is such laws that encourage outsourcing. he says that if it's true he must need a new account stand. [ laughter ] now, we know for sure it was not the real mitt romney because he seems to be doing just fine with his current accountant. >> the romney campaign fired back, quote: president obama offered no defense of his record and no vision for the future. president obama simply offered more false attacks and renewed his call for job-killing tax hikes. earlier today, the president's senior campaign advisor david axelrod said this about the debate. the president's never satisfied with his performance. he is always challenging himself. and he will revie

homework. >> governor romney, however, may have twice the work load. he'll have two opponents on stage tomorrow, president obama and himself. eugene robinson write in "the washington post" -- it prompts to be an epic clash. mitt romney versus mitt romney. oh. and president obama will be there too. this conundrum of what we'll call the paradox of the mittens, dates back to 1994 when senator ted kennedy dropped this debate heat rock. >> on the question of the choice issue, i have supported the row v raid wade, i am pro choice, my opponent is multiple choice. >> so which bubble will the multiple choice candidate fill in on tomorrow night's test? which mitt will triumph on stage. even members of the conservative establishment aren't sure. bill o'reilly conceded mitt romney is a mystery man. >> people don't really know who mitt romney is. the pressure is on the governor. he has to come across as a regular guy, which i'm not sure he can do. >> true to form romney's policies remain veiled in the same cloud of mystery. his running mate paul ryan refused to say how much their tax cut would cost

will face his republican challenger, former met -- massachusetts governor mitt romney on campus. 80 million people are expected to watch on tv and online in this first debate between the two man. we will be here for the next two hours to set the stage, discussing the debate, logistics, and policies of the evening. we will involve you in this discussion. here is how you can take part. iphone, democrats can dial -- by phone, democrats can dial. republicans and independents -- the numbers on the screen. if you will tweet about the debate, use the hash tag #cspan2012. we may use your comments on air. our question for this program -- what would you have if you had the chance to ask? this is a domestic policy debate. you can send our thoughts on the question you would most like to ask on our facebook page. facebook.com/cspan. the moderator is jim lehrer of pbs. the debate is structured into a series of 15 minute questions, many focusing on the economy. the economy gets the first half of the debate, with questions 1, two, and 3. then they move on to the topic of health care, which has major econom

mitt romney's tax plan would affect the middle class. the governor can fight back by offering evidence the claims aren't true. do you think they have done enough to actually offer specifics, and do you think he's going to have to do that at the debate? >> i think he's going to have to offer specifics at some time, anderson. i mean, look, there are not just magic asterisks in the romney/ryan program. there are complete empty sections of geography, complete deserts. we don't even know how those huge tax cuts, mostly for the very wealthy, are going to be paid for. there's no idea of which loopholes are going to be closed, how loopholes are going to be closed, whether loopholes are going to be closed, what in fact is a loophole. there's no there there. until there is a there there, the public is not going to feel that this plan is credible. >> ari, what about that? romney and ryan keep saying we believe we're going to work with congress and work out those details. >> here's how i look at it. number one, he's a candidate for office. when you look at the totality of his proposals, he says he

was when romney said -- i am going to say "governor romney," in that we should respect president obama and governor romney, their positions -- his statement that we will keep our military strong. we have an excess of military contractors. we have massive abuse of military machine that could use a thinning out, and a little bit more accountability. i think if we curtailed some of that and put that towards education and infrastructure -- governor romney says we are going to build a 12 million jobs. what are you going to do? are they just going to come about? >> are you voting for governor romney? >> no, i am not. i'm voting for president obama again. >> charlottesville. go ahead with your comments. >> yes -- >> charlottesville, make sure you mute your television and then go ahead with your comments by otherwise there is a feedback. charlottesville, are you there? >> yeah, i am there. i am an independent voter. i moved to this country five years ago. i was a legal immigrant. when i came here, like president obama says, when we were caught, i did not have nothing to i worked so hard. i got

from the left. >> governor romney's that he wants to create 12 million jobs during his term, that's to hundred 50,000 jobs a month. in the past the u.s. has always been an exporter and that is what created jobs. how do you see his promise of creating 12 million jobs in four years? >> unlikely. [laughter] does anyone want to elaborate on that? >> i think we are in a completely different job market. the convention back in 1992 was if you work hard and play by the rules you should expect to be in the american middle class and i said condensation but that's basically what he's been saying and obama has repeated it. i just don't think that is applicable. you have to work harder and study laundry and relearn a faster and may be reinvent the rules and that is because we are in a very different work environment where technology is making jobs out a bit faster and spinning off new jobs each of the jobs require education. so i think that if we are going to -- america is a huge advantage in this world because it's -- i think the world is going to be divided going forward between the high ima

friendly interview on a rival network. it just doesn't happen that way. and also maybe what governor romney is trying to do is to try to sway some of those folks who might be thinking of going through the early voting process and more than half the country, folks who are voting right now to try to convince them that, hey, that guy we saw at the debate on wednesday isn't as bad as you thought and that 47% thing, he's apologized so let me vote for him. the only problem is there are 32 more days to go. as we sift through really the lies that he told during the debate and people get to see that, well, the mitt romney you saw on wednesday is not the mitt romney who has been campaigning all this time, i'm not sure how effective that apology to the 47% is going to be. >> right. michelle, another number mitt romney is not fond of talking about is 7.8%, the new unemployment figure. here is how he spun that into bad news earlier today. listen to this. >> the reason it's come down this year is primarily due to the fact that more and more people have just stopped looking for work. if you just drop out

performance. >> governor romney may dance around the position, but if you want to be president you owe the american people the truth. >> gretchen: who is the one really lying? >> steve: meanwhile thank goodness for al gore . he explains why the president flopped out. >> you go to 5,000 feet and only a few hours to adjust. >> steve: isn't he the guy who invented the intim ator. blame it on the thin air . we'll tell you that story. >> brian: joe biden, take another gaffe. >> you guys sit down if you have a seat. guyings, i didn't realize you didn't have seats, i apologize . my mother would kill me if a woman was standing this long. i apologize . >> brian: another instant biden classic coming to you and what he said later on is note worthy especially to paul ryan who will be debating him shortly . -- shortly. "fox and friends" starts right now. >> steve: so you were wearing pants all along? >> brian: i am not saying anything. >> gretchen: they are snap on. >> steve: as long as they are not snap offs . >> gretchen: we have a peek underneath. twitter me if you think brian bears boxers or br

or the president? >> well, first of all governor romney has been attacked with these ridiculous and clearly untrue ads from the obama campaign that he's going to raise taxes on the middle class. that's clearly false. i think governor romney needs to lay out what his tax plan truly is and why it's going to help everyone in america from job creators to middle class families. i think he needs to be very clear and explicit about that tonight. >> well, i mean, you say it's clearly false. i mean, there's obviously a big debate about it. as best i can tell the math doesn't work. we've gone from fuzzy math to no math in american politics. i want to hear what he has to say, but i think the big question that neither candidates's really answered is about the housing crisis. we have a third of american homes under water right now. romney says they should just all go into foreclosure, that seems to be a bad idea. obama hasn't fixed it. i want to hear the bread and butter issues being talked about. i haven't heard enough about the housing crisis. >> so what's the question? >> what are you going to do about the

of work to do. so the question here tonight is not where we've been but where we're going. governor romney has a perspective that says if we cut taxes, skew towards the wealthy and roll back regulations that we'll be better off. i've got a different view. >> i'm concerned that the path we're on has just been unsuccessful. the president has a view very similar to the view he had when he ran four years ago, that a bigger government, spending more, taxing more, regulating more, if you will trickle down government would work. that's not the right answer for america. >> reporter: jobs was the dominant issue. the comment that lit up twitter more than anything else was a comment by mitt romney how he would cut spending to pbs. the debate was hosted by pbs' jim lehrer. >> i'm sorry, jim. i'm going to stop the subsidy to pbs. i'm going to stop other things. i like pbs, big bird and i like you, too, but i'm not going to keep spending things and borrow money from china to pay for it. >> reporter: after the comment was made, there were 17,000 tweets per minute for the words "big bird ,," 10,000 for pb

accused him of lying. >> governor romney may dance around his positions. he may do a tap dance and a two step, but if you want to be president, then you owe the american people the truth. >> briefing report is white house senior adviser david plouffe used the words dishonest or the phrase not being honest nearly a dozen times. that's also the message of a new ad on romney's tax plan from the obama campaign. >> why won't romney level with us about his tax plan which gives the wealthy huge new tax breaks? if we can't trust him here, how could we ever trust him here? >> the romney campaign has taken issue of course with what the obama campaign uses which is a tax policy center analysis. in that ad that draws on the -- to argue that mitt romney's tax plan depends on a $5 trillion tax cut that's not paid for. the conclusion they drew is the only way you offset those tax cuts over ten years, after handcuffing yourself on the pledges that romney has made to reduce tax rates across the board by 20% eliminating the alternative minimum tax and erasing the federal estate tax is to eliminate deducti

-to-face for the two candidates. president obama, governor mitt romney preparing to make their cases to tens of millions of americans expected to watch on television tonight. in the meantime, "the daily caller" releasing a videotape from 2007 where then candidate, barack obama, suggested racism played a role in the government's response to hurricane katrina. now the reverend jeremiah write was in the audience at the time. mr. obama went on to praise the controversial pastor, calling him a friend and a great leader. mike emanuel is live in washington with all of this. and, mike, some of then candidate barack obama's remarks deal with trying to help poor people. how did he handle that topic? >> reporter: well, gregg on the video senator obama at the time seas we don't need to build more highways out in the suburbs. he said there should be investment in minority owned businesses in our neighborhoods in front of that group of black ministers. here is mr. obama on assisting the poor. >> they may need help with basic skills, how to shop, how to show up to work on time. how to wear the right clothe

and house, but not facts. >> now, governor romney's proposal that he's been promoting for 18 months calls for a $5 trillion tax cut on top of $2 trillion of additional spending for our military. >> i don't have a tax cut scale that you're talking about. my view is that we ought to provide tax relief to people in the middle class, but i'm not going to reduce the share of taxes paid by high income people. >> however, independent fact checkers say romney's tax plan does add up to nearly $5 trillion over ten years and would give the biggest breaks to the highest earners. the same groups say the president is using fuzzy math. especially his claim of $4 trillion of deficit reduction. romney made a point he'd cut the budget for pbs, even to the and moderator, jim lehrer from pbs. >> i like pbs, big bird, you, too, but i'm not going to keep on spending money. >> i want to make sure i got this straight. he'll get rid of regulations on wall street, but he's going to crack down on sesame street. >> the debate was civil. but today a key romney surrogate said this. >> what people saw last night was a

of the policy. governor romney without doubt understands that our country is exceptional. he recognizes the role we've played in the world. he believes the world is a better place if we're a participant in that world, and recognizes that it is not for us to go around the world apologizing and ringing our hands. what's called the arab spring is something happening in the islamic world. it's not arab only, because it's happening in a good many other countries as you know well. it's not spring, but it's summer and fall. it's going to be winter. it is a significant shift on the part of a lot of people in a lot of countries, who are encouraged and see the rise of islamist nonsecular forces in those countries. that is not in our interest. >> greta: mr. secretary, always nice to see you, sir. >> thank you. >> greta: straight ahead, why is the obama administration telling companies to break the law? how can the president justify this? making matters worse, the president is promising to pay the legal bills of the companies breaking the law with, you guessed it, taxpayer money. this story is likely to ung

here, governor romney has laid out a vision and a direction for this country. let's hold the president to the same standard as well. >> first of all, we have a deficit plan, it's got health care savings. romney doesn't have a deficit plan. he's got a plan to cut taxes for millionaires and billionaires. he's got a 5 trilli$5 trillion. -- another $2 trillion in defense spending. >> just three days into the first presidential debate, meanwhile mitt romney is off to the trail. we have two reports, we begin with nbc's peter alexander, he's with the romney campaign in boston, with a good morning to you, peter. what are you hearing about all the debate preps today. he o'clock najs that this is an important opportunity in her debate. people have a tendency to focus on the small things, like the color of a candidate's tie or the dramatic one liners, which is his need to get across the big picture message. he says if he does that, he thinks he can be effective over the course of the next three debates and ultimately win this thing. we heard this morning from governor chris christie of new jersey

that night was the -- astonishing walking away or effort to walk away by governor romney of some of the most -- some of the key proposals he's been making for 18 straight months. you know, on the central issue of taxes, he's been saying every day for 18 months that he wants a 20% cut in marginal tax rates and he'll figure out a way that won't increase the deficit. well there's only one way to make that happen, that is to raise the tax burden on middle income americans. the number on his tax cut is $5 trillion. because he's talking about a 20% cut in marginal rates, eliminating the alternative minimum tax, estate tax and other deductions, $480 billion a year, $5 trillion over ten years, that's the number. then he says, you know, every day for the last 18 months, i've been talking about repealing every aspect of obama care, but actually i didn't mean it. well it's too late for that. if you repeal obama care across the board, that means that kids can no longer stay on their parents' coverage through age 26, it means that we can go back to a system of denying coverage for preexisting conditions,

comfortable with governor romney's position. >> if you are giving advice your advice would be what? >> i won hispanics in colorado in my second race. i think governor romney's focus on the economy are hispanic americans are impacted perhaps even more than the rest by this softer economy. and so i would do what governor romney has been doing and that is continue to address the base issues. this is an election that has to look at how well we have done over the last four years. president obama was elected with this hope and this vision for change. and we have seen change actually for the worst. i think it is very fair to look at his record and say here is what he said four years ago and here is what he hasn't accomplished. so obviously a lot of tonight is going to be about president obama's record, just since four years ago president obama was looking back at the record of those he wanted to replace. >>ormer republican governor out here. thanks for coming on this. >>> the monthly private payrolls report is out today. markets are just opening. let's get to the market run down. becky quick is her

romney has been here since monday night. with me now is former colorado governor billowens. the second of three colorado governors i have on my show today. let me start with the same question i asked governor hickenlooper. why is colorado a swing state? what do you tell friends and families and colleagues when they ask what makes colorado such a right down the middle state? >> it is one of the best educated states in the country in terms of college graduates it is the best educated state in the country. we really are a microcosm of the country. a lot of coloradoens came from other states. and so it's a nice place to battle out the country's elections. and as you probably pointed out earlier we have gone all sorts of ways in presidential elections. we have elected democratic governors. i think the coloradoens take a look at the candidate and vote for the person they think will do the best job for colorado and the country. >> it seems to me in watching what i feel like the conversation colorado voters are having with each other is that the president thinks women voters and social issues

into it to the level we should, and romney will not talk about how he is such a green governor in massachusetts, which definitely is a foot lot. >> tomorrow with the domestic policy debate. >> i was going to international affairs, but it is domestic policy. they are not going to discuss how we can get african- americans more jobs. they will talk in general about jobs, since we need jobs more, we should have more attention on its. >> in a sad remembrance of the 400th murder in chicago over the last couple days, we will not talk about the tie between youth unemployment numbers and how it has impacted the dropout rates and the crimes we're seeing in these urban environments. >> i would like to see an honest conversation about collective bargaining. >> i like that one. , we talk about that new small business economy, but african- americans, our economy is not a mom and pop, it is a mom or pop. we need to make sure it is addressing the mom and or pops our communities. , hate speech and its relationship to hate crimes will not be discussed. it will not be discussed even though we are losing a lot of people

did well. you never know what game that governor romney will come out with. the centerpiece of the economic policies so far has been tax cuts. last night we found out that he does not -- i guess the outdoors that to china -- outsourced that to china. i don't know. i think as time goes on, it will become pretty clear that the governor romney has changed a number of his positions are does not remember his positions. at the end of the day, we have bought two debates coming up for the president, and i feel real good about it. -- we have two the dates coming up for the president, and i feel real good about it. it is easy to say i would have done this or said that, but remember he was in front of many people. all debates are tough. i am looking forward to it. the thing with congressman ryan is that he has been straightforward up until now. there are significant changes he wants to make, but we have a fundamental view on a whole range of issues. i think it would be a good debate. >> [no audio] >> i have been setting up on a congressman ryan's stands on issues. i do not want to say

understand where president obama and governor romney stand on the big issues. today we'll tackle an issue important to many americans, gun control. >> nibble the second amendment. i believe in people's lawful right to bear arms. >> i will protect the second amendment rights of american people. >> reporter: both sides stick to language in the constitution with president obama attempting to pacify critics from the national rifle association. >> i will not take your shotgun away. i will not take your rifle away. i won't take your handgun away. >> reporter: the fact he hasn't even tried doesn't placate the nra, with continued unsubstantiated warnings that began back in 2008. >> all that first-term lip service to gun owners is just part of a massive obama conspiracy to deceive voters and hide his true intentions to destroy the second amendment during his second term. >> reporter: romney has been actively cultivating the nra, speaking at this year's intention. it's a swift for the ones tough-on-guns governor. consider the assault weapons ban, president obama is a yes with an asterisk. mr. romne

fingers openly questioning governor romney's strategy. that is bringing him to pennsylvania at this very hour. that's a state where he was down by 12 points according to a poll from quinnipiac university. other polls out show president obama and romney locked in a tight fight. according to the nbc news/"wall street journal"/marist poll, president obama has a slight lead in nevada and north carolina but basically within the margin of error. and in virginia, a new poll from suffolk university/nbc 12 puts obama slightly ahead of romney, also within the margin of error. so, how can romney turn it around? it may not be easy. some people within this romney campaign have concluded he's not actually a very good politician. here's what one romney official explained to politico. he said -- now romney's former rival newt gingrich doesn't go quite that far, but he says that romney needs to reform his thinking. >> i think they're only now beginning to come to grips with the general election. they had a very -- >> scary -- >> they had a very successful primary strategy. in a primary you can raise enou

want to introduce fake governor romney and fake president obama. welcome to "politicsnation" and great to see you. folks, 39 days till the election and there's one way to predict who will win that really does seem to work. it turns out, the sale of presidential halloween masks are actually a great way to know who's going to win. in fact, in the past four elections, halloween masks have determined by their sales they accurately predicted the winner. and guess who is selling more this year? that's right. president obama masks are out selling mitt romney's masks by nearly 40%. congratulations, mr. president. when you think about it, mitt romney's been hiding behind a mask this entire election. a mask he only takes off in quiet rooms, behind closed doors, when he's talking to wealthy donors. but voters don't seem to like it much. and a new fox news poll, yes, fox news poll, shows romney trailing nationally by five points. and get this, he has a lower favorable rating than george w. bush. don't adjust your tv set. mr. romney is less liked than bush. huh? maybe that's something to do with th

. >> shockingly, senior white house adviser david plouffe had the same feelings about governor mitt romney. >> we'd expect it all along that governor romney will have a good night. he's prepared more than any candidate in history and shown himself to be a good debater through the years. >> even the candidates were tamping down expectations yesterday. >> i don't think anyone would suggest the debates aren't important. i can't tell you how important it will be. i don't know what will happen at the debates. >> governor romney is a good debater. i'm just okay. >> the soft performance has gotten so soft it's almost evaporated. but while almost everyone seems to be muting enthusiasm in trying to undersell new jersey governor chris christie is taking a different tack. overselling with gusto. >> come thursday morning, the entire narrative of this race is going to change. we have a candidate that is going to do extraordinarily well on wednesday night. when we get to thursday morning george, you're going to be shaking your head saying it's a brand new race with 33 days to go. >> governor christie right in

to go until governor romney takes the stage in northern virginia. it's the first time he and paul ryan have campaigned together in the commonwealth since ryan was introduced as the gop running mate in norfolk. northern virginia bureau chief julie carey is live in fishersville, virginia. the romney supporters must be feeling reenergized tonight. >> reporter: hey, doreen, i would have to describe the atmosphere here festive. thousands have packed into this location to show mitt romney exactly what they think of his debate performance last night. telling us in fact the roads into this venue have been backed up for miles, folks making their way in here. this is a solidly red part of virginia. but even here romney backers say the debate inspires them to get behind this ticket in a whole new way. decked out in romney t-shirts and buttons, supporters lined up early in the shenandoah valley to see both mitt romney and paul ryan. most here say it was governor romney's performance in the debate that has them suddenly pumped up about the ticket's prospects on election day. >> i didn't feel excite
